How Can I Verify that my Fooptrints Readings are Accurate?

Question: How can I Verify that my Footprints Readings are Correct?  It appears that I sometimes have frozen readings, missing data, or incorrect readings.

Answer: If your readings in Footprints are incorrect, displayed as zero, or you are missing data for periods of time, then you are most likely experiencing a problem with your PLC (power line carrier) communication from the MTU in your breaker panel to your gateway. When you have good communication from your MTU to your Gateway, the LED  on the side of the gateway (near the reset button) will blink green/yellow about every 2-5 seconds. If the LED indicates poor communication, then follow the steps below to isolate the problem and correct it.

If you have never had communication to the Gateway, go through steps 1, 2,and 3.  If your system has previously reported data, see note 1 below.

If you have more than one MTU, please see note 3 at the bottom of this post before proceeding.

Step 1- Verify that you have entered the correct product IDs in the System Settings Wizard in Footprints. (If you cannot access your Footprints page, please refer to this post:,11.0.html.  What is entered should match what is printed on the MTU itself. You’ll only need to enter the 6-digit number/letter combination after S/N--the format will be A S/N 12 34 56. Once the IDs are entered correctly and the gateway has been updated from the Write to Device tab of the System Settings Wizard, check to see if the LED on the side of the Gateway (near the reset button) is now flashing. If not, then go to Step 2.

Step 2- Verify that the MTU inside your breaker panel is blinking green about every 2-5 seconds. If the MTU is blinking, go to Step 3.  If not, then cycle power to the breaker that the MTU is connected to.  If the MTU does not blink, please fill out a Support Ticket at this link:

Step 3- Verify that your Gateway is plugged directly into the wall and that nothing else is plugged into the other socket.  Remember that you are looking for the side LED to blink as shown in the installation video.  If it is not, it is very likely that there is noise interference.  There are a couple of TEMPORARY steps to determine the source of the noise and the best way to get around it.  UNPLUG all electronics in the vicinity of the Gateway (including router and computer), and check the LED on the side of the Gateway.  If you don't have the LED flashing on the side, begin turning off lights throughout the house and unplug other electronic equipment, then unplug the Ethernet cable from the Gateway and test other locations for the Gateway.  If you find the source of the noise, this can be corrected with a filter (link to filter info).  If you don't find any sources of interference, and/or you need the Gateway in a specific location, you can connect the MTU as a 2 wire connection to increase the signal strength - Note that this connection requires the MTU to be on the same breaker or the same phase as the Gateway, (see note2).

Note 1: To verify whether interference is affecting your readings, access your stats page. To do this, open Footprints in your browser. Then type http://ted5000/stats.htm into the URL address bar. You will see a black and white chart appear. Look for the rows on the left labeled “MTU Rec” and “MTU Skp”. If your MTU Skp is 20% of the MTU Rec count you do have some noise interference and should follow step 3 above.

Note 2: To connect as 120V connection: The signal from the MTU to the Gateway will be amplified, (and less susceptible to noise) by capping off the red wire and only connecting the black and white wires of the MTU power cable. However, it's VERY IMPORTANT to note that the black wire must be connected to the same breaker as the Gateway or another breaker connection on that same phase, (every other connection up and down in the panel is the same phase).  For your safety and the protection of the MTU, turn off power and note all other precautions in the installation manual before proceeding. (see 120v MTU connection video - Video 4 - 120V MTU Connection.) Check to see if the LED on the side of the Gateway (near the reset button) is now flashing. If so, then open your System Settings Wizard in Footprints and change your “MTU Connection Type” to 120V (BK, WH) on the System Layout tab.

If you have more than one MTU and none of them are communicating yet, then please troubleshoot one MTU at a time. You can simply disconnect the other MTU(s) from the power cable while you get each one working.
